The C marking and two load indices
The letter C after the size, as in 215/65 R16 C 109/107, marks a commercial tyre: its construction is sturdier and designed for higher pressure. The first load index (109 – 1030 kg) applies to single fitment (one wheel at each end of the axle), the second (107 – 975 kg) to twin wheels, as found at the rear of some heavier vans. Tyre size, construction and load index must meet the vehicle maker's requirements, so a passenger car tyre, even an XL one, suits a van only if the maker allows it. See what XL, HL and C mean.
Pressure depends on the load
A C tyre can carry its full load only at sufficient pressure, which is why makers often give separate values for an empty and a loaded van – on the sticker in the door frame or in the owner's manual. Latvia's roadworthiness rules require tyre pressures to match the maker's specification. Check them with the tyres cold before a longer trip with a load.
Winter requirements
Paragraph 219 of the Road Traffic Regulations requires winter tyres from 1 December to 1 March on cars, vans and buses with a gross weight of up to 3.5 t, which covers many vans, and in this period the roadworthiness rules require the 3PMSF symbol and at least 4 mm of tread. Above 3.5 t winter tyres are not mandatory, but the roadworthiness rules still set a minimum winter tread depth for any tyres – 2 mm, or 3 mm for a bus. The gross weight is shown in the registration certificate. For winter tyres in this size, see 215/65 R16 winter tyres.

Van tyre sizes and load indices vary even between versions of the same model, so compare them with your current tyres or the maker's specification before you buy. If your size is different, set it in the filters or use the search by vehicle.
