What matters for passenger car tyres
- Load index and speed index – Latvia's roadworthiness rules require the tyre size and construction to match the car maker's specification, and neither index may be insufficient. Heavier cars such as EVs often need XL tyres – see what XL, HL and C mean.
- How you drive – if you do a lot of motorway driving, wet grip and noise matter more, and with a high annual mileage the fuel efficiency class, i.e. rolling resistance, is worth a look too. All three ratings can be compared on the EU tyre label.
- Run Flat – if your car came with run-flat tyres and has no spare wheel, decide what you will do after a puncture before switching to regular tyres; see how run-flat tyres work.
Pairs and seasons
In Latvia, the tyres on one axle must be of the same make, with the same name and tread pattern, so tyres are usually bought in pairs or as a full set. From 1 December to 1 March the car must be on winter tyres with the 3PMSF symbol and at least 4 mm of tread; the rest of the year the minimum depth is 1.6 mm, and studs are prohibited from 1 May to 1 October.
