Front and rear tyres
The front tyre is narrower and built for steering and braking, while the wider rear tyre transmits the engine's power, which is why sidewalls are often marked FRONT or REAR. The correct sizes are given by the motorcycle maker in the owner's manual. Tyre makers recommend fitting the same model front and rear, as the two are developed to work as a pair.
Construction, TL/TT and direction of rotation
The letter in the size shows the construction: R is radial, B bias-belted, and D or a dash (-) diagonal (what the letters R, B, D and ZR mean). Do not mix radial and diagonal tyres on one motorcycle: they behave differently in corners, and Latvia's roadworthiness rules prohibit fitting diagonal and radial tyres at the same time.
A TL (Tubeless) tyre goes on a tubeless rim without a tube, but on a tube-type rim, as on many spoked wheels, it needs a tube of the correct size. A TT (Tube Type) tyre always needs a tube. The arrow on the sidewall shows the direction of rotation, and fitting a tyre against it is prohibited.
The first kilometres and tread
A new tyre has a slippery surface, so tyre makers advise riding gently for at least the first 100 km – no hard acceleration or braking, and only small lean angles. Latvia's roadworthiness rules set a minimum tread depth of 0.8 mm for motorcycle tyres. If you ride little each year, your tyres may age before they wear out – see how to tell a tyre's age.

120/70 R17 is a common front tyre size on many sports and touring motorcycles, which usually have a wider rear tyre, such as 180/55 R17. Check both sizes on your current tyres or in the manual and set each wheel's size in the filters separately.
